GIMP troubleshooting Windows 11
Numbered fixes for SmartScreen warnings, antivirus quarantine, missing DLL errors, tablet pressure, and slow startups on Windows 10 and 11.
Guide 1
Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer
Common after a new GIMP release when reputation databases lag behind the published SHA-256.
-
1. Confirm you have gimp-3.2.4-setup.exe
Check the file name and approximate size (~188 MB) before trusting any More info prompt.
-
2. Verify SHA-256 in PowerShell
Run
Get-FileHash .\gimp-3.2.4-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256and compare to ec31d757dd82831d201ffcf47ffeac4175df739e0c02d5122e89aeeadfb988cc. -
3. Check Digital Signatures
Right-click the file → Properties → Digital Signatures. The signature should show as valid for the GIMP publisher certificate.
-
4. Use More info → Run anyway only after checks pass
If hash and signature match, open SmartScreen details and continue. If either check fails, delete the file and download again.

Guide 2
Antivirus quarantines gimp-3.2.4-setup.exe
Heuristic engines sometimes flag new open-source installers. Softonic-style user reports often describe the same pattern.
- Open the quarantine or protection history in your antivirus console.
- Locate gimp-3.2.4-setup.exe and note the detection name (often a generic heuristic).
- Compute SHA-256 and confirm it matches the published value on the download page.
- Only restore or allow the file after the hash matches and the digital signature validates.
- Re-run the installer. If Windows still blocks it, follow the SmartScreen guide above.
Guide 3
Missing DLL or GIMP fails to start
Usually incomplete installs, leftover plugins, or GPU driver conflicts on Windows 11.
- Uninstall GIMP from Settings → Apps, then reboot.
- Delete leftover folders under your user profile
AppData\Roaming\GIMPonly if you accept resetting preferences. - Install GIMP 3.2.4 again from a hash-verified installer.
- If launch still fails, update GPU drivers, then try starting with hardware acceleration disabled in Preferences → Display.
- Disable third-party plugins temporarily by moving the plug-ins folder aside.
Guide 4
Graphics tablet pressure not working
Softonic reviewers often praise tablet use once drivers are correct. Pressure issues are usually OS or driver side.
- Install the latest manufacturer driver (not only the Windows generic HID driver).
- In GIMP, open Edit → Preferences → Input Devices and map the stylus.
- Enable pressure dynamics on the Paintbrush or MyPaint brush tool options.
- Test Windows Ink vs. older Wintab modes if your tablet control panel offers both.
- Restart GIMP after changing tablet drivers.
Guide 5
GIMP starts slowly on Windows 11
Large font caches, network drives, and heavy plugin folders are common causes.
- Wait for the first-run font scan to finish once after install.
- In Preferences → Folders, remove unused font directories on slow network shares.
- Keep the swap directory on a fast local SSD.
- Disable unused plugins and themes.
- Close cloud sync clients that lock files inside your GIMP profile folder.
